Adam Ruben laments the state of scientific literature in Science. For what it’s worth, I think he’s precisely correct – science writing has become infected by an overarching and highly prescribed set of ‘acceptable’ terms that disciplines the writer and impoverishes the reading experience. I have a feeling Huxley and other notable Victorian scientists would agree – after all, they were masters of the English language and major contributors to our understanding of the natural world.
