I just finished teaching this text to my current crop of international students. They seemed alternatingly perplexed and morbidly fascinated by the Beat culture. It just shows how difficult it is to teach a text that is as historically rooted and culturally conditioned as Kerouac’s book certainly is. The movie is directed by Walter Salles (The Motorcycle Diaries) and although Viggo M. looks intriguing as William S. Burroughs the idea of watching Kristen Stewart fumble lines for two hours makes me cringe.
